My name is Debra Jay.

I am a licensed massage therapist and certified end-of-life doula. My journey into this work began in 2020 when I became the primary caregiver for my mother during her time in hospice. Guiding her through the final stages of her life profoundly changed my understanding of both living and dying.

My mother’s diagnosis of stage four lung cancer was a moment that challenged everything I thought I knew. Like so many families, we initially fought to preserve her life at all costs, but through trial, error, and raw honesty, I learned the importance of honoring her wishes and embracing comfort over cure. This experience taught me the value of compassion, presence, and the courage it takes to let go.

In my mother’s last moments, I held her cradled in my arms, offering the reassurance and peace she needed. That transformative moment not only deepened my love for her but also revealed my calling. I realized that I was not “too soft” for this work and that my natural empathy, sensitivity, and dedication to creating a safe, comforting space were actually my greatest strengths. I would not have a heart this big if I was not meant to share it.

Now, I use those qualities to support others and their loved ones through the end-of-life journey. Whether providing palliative massage, emotional support, or guidance through the dying process, my goal is to empower individuals to approach death with dignity, peace, and love. It is an honor to walk alongside those navigating this sacred transition.
